A man, allegedly carrying over Rs 40,000 in a gym bag, was robbed and shot at in south-west Delhi’s Dwarka Sector 7 around 11am on Monday.

As reported in Hindustan Times, Police  sources said Satyapal, 37, who runs a food takeaway shop, was carrying old notes of Rs 500 and Rs1,000. He had planned to exchange the notes with shopkeepers so that he could use the money for a relative’s marriage.

DCP (south-west) Surender Kumar, however, denied that the victim was carrying any cash.

“Satyapal said that as the banks were closed on Monday and most ATMs had no cash, he was planning to exchange the invalid notes with shopkeepers he knew. He wanted new notes urgently to shop for his relative’s marriage that was to take place on Monday night,” an official said.

Satyapal told police he carried the cash with him to the gym where he went every morning before going to his shop.

As Satyapal came out of the gym to go to his shop in nearby Ramphal Chowk, he kept the bag in the back seat of his car and got into the driver’s seat. Three men arrived on a motorcycle and one of them allegedly picked up the bag.

“Satyapal noticed that someone closed the rear door of his car. He turned and saw that the bag was missing. He noticed a person running with the bag. Satyapal got out and chased them. The robbers accelerated and one of them shot at Satyapal twice. One of the bullets hit him in the thigh,” the officer said.

On hearing Satyapal screaming, locals rushed to help him but the robbers fled. A passerby called police. Satyapal was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment, police said.

A case has been registered at Dwarka (south) police station. Police officials said they are examining the CCTV footages of the area to identify the robbers.
